Ambiguous wording in a policy
If a clause can reasonably be read in more than one way, write down the specific ambiguity and ask for a written explanation. Avoid filling in undefined terms yourself. Keep the response with the original wording so another reader can see what was clarified and what remains unclear.
A practical checklist
- Identify the undefined word or condition.
- Write a focused question about its meaning.
- Preserve the answer without paraphrasing away qualifications.
Putting it in context
A phrase such as reasonable review time supplies no exact duration. Record that the duration is unspecified rather than turning it into an assumed number of days.
Keep in mind
An informal explanation may not resolve every contractual question.
