Password reuse and account exposure
Reusing a password connects otherwise separate accounts. A unique password managed securely helps limit that connection. When investigating a suspicious account event, consider the security of the associated email account as well, because it may receive recovery messages and notifications.
A practical checklist
- Use unique passwords for important accounts.
- Review available multifactor protection.
- Check recovery contact details through the genuine service.
Putting it in context
A secure password on one account is less useful if its recovery email is controlled by someone else. Review the recovery path as part of the same security task.
Keep in mind
Follow the account provider's current recovery instructions if access has already been lost.
